NDR: Broadcasting far and wide with Sophora

NDR

The NDR is a dynamic broadcaster, demanding an agile yet powerful CMS. They require a system capable of managing dozens of websites, hundreds of editors, and millions of users for TV-, radio-, company- and intranet sites, as well as sites for special events. The system needed to accommodate multi-channel publishing in all types of media, including internet, mobile phones, analog and digital TV, and tele- and digitext. And the NDR requested a flexible page layout for their own ease of use and to suit the needs of a variety of different websites.

With Sophora, NDR is able to connect directly to their TV software infrastructure, e.g. Dalet's newsroom system OpenMedia, Softel's teletext system Cyclone, and NDR's own flash video server. And due to Sophora's intuitive programming library, NDR technicians were able to program sites themselves, using Sophora's astute programming library.

Of course, NDR wanted improved and simplified work features to save time and frustration during daily business operations and tasks. A full-blown editor, fast publishing, easy image editing, smoother communication features and planning tools were updates and improvements the NDR requested and which Sophora was able to fulfill.

About NDR

"NDR - das Beste am Norden" / "The NDR - the best of the north"
High quality programming and busy websites make the NDR unique in its marketplace.

The German broadcaster NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk) is one of Germany's largest public broadcasting corporations. Eight radio programs and NDR TV provide the city of Hamburg and Northern Germany with ambitious, high-quality programs 24 hours a day. The programming is characterised by their high standards of journalistic competence and subject diversity. As the 3rd largest broadcasting corporation belonging to Germany's public broadcasting organization, the ARD (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland), the NDR contributes 17,5% of the joint programming of Das Erste (The German National TV Channel). The NDR also is an important cultural institution in its own right. The NDR Orchestras, Bands, and Choirs are world-renown, playing international venues and releasing high quality recordings in many genres of music. The NDR is also the producer of many of today’s interesting and ground-breaking films, including such award winners as Fatih Akin's Gegen Die Wand.

tagesschau.de makes headlines with Sophora

tagesschau.de is one of Germany's most relied on news websites with millions of viewers and a large body of news to report. They require a content management system capable of delivering ground-breaking news, as well as providing the means for top-quality in-depth coverage of today’s important topics. Of course, as with all leading broadcasters, the system must accommodate various media including mobile phones, teletext, pod casts, and digital TV.

The staff of tagesschau.de is a very accomplished group of editors and journalists, responsible for creating high quality multi-media articles. The work schedule is non-stop, 24 hours a day, and demands a content management system that is strong and flexible enough to keep up with such a gruelling pace. And due to the breadth of tagesschau.de's publishing circle, tagesschau.de required quick access to an ever-growing multimedia database. Of course, working with such large sources of information in a time-sensitive context can be consuming and awkward.

So Sophora puts the fun back into writing and editing news. The tagesschau staff does not have to focus on administrative tasks; on managing programs, fussing with quirky web browsers, or digging for content. Instead, with Sophora, the focus stays on creating high quality end content. The tagesschau.de staff can remain driven and concentrated on what they do best: bringing important, relevant content to a broad, news-hungry audience.
