Double Olympic success: With 31 medals and 25 million visits, the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang delighted athletes and editors alike. The German athletes won a total of 14 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze medals. This put Germany in second place in the medal table.

After Vancouver, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk again took on the lead for reporting on the Olympic Winter Games from February 9 to 25, 2018 in South Korea.

True to the motto “Olympics always and everywhere”, sportschau.de provided Olympic enthusiasts with the latest results, extensive background information, analyzes and interviews.

In addition to a diverse on-demand offer, live tickers and three parallel video live stream channels completed the coverage of the Olympic events.

Sports enthusiasts were also able to experience the Olympics live using HbbTV-enabled devices.

2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro

The internet and live streaming offer on rio.sportschau.de/ recorded a high level of interest at the Olympic Games in Rio with 28.5 million visits and 135.2 million page impressions. The number of accesses to the live streams amounted to 22.4 million, despite the five-hour time difference to the venue.

The NDR was in charge of the Olympic Games in Rio.

In order to keep interested people up to date, the website rio.sportschau.de/ offered the sports enthusiasts some special functions this year: With "Olympia live in 360 °" it provided 360 ° video recordings for certain competitions.

The games could be seen from a specially set perspective, and there was also the option of filtering by type of sport and person or viewing the schedule for a specific sport.

The NDR was able to rely on Sophora for trouble-free delivery to the website.

Winter Olympic Games Sochi 2014

The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially called the XXII Olympic Winter Games were a major international multi-sport event held from February 7 to February 23, 2014 in Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia.

The official website sportschau.de/olympia of ARD provided current videos, images, background reports, results, tables and a live ticker during the Olympic Games in Sochi.

Bayerischer Rundfunk took the leadership for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

The website was already launched in October 2013 and accompanied failure-free all sixteen Olympic days.

Also, the live streaming offers for the various games have been received positively. Interested people in the Olympics used the live stream parallel between 270.000 and 2,9 Million times day by day (Source: ard.de). Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting, BR) had the leadership for ARD´s TV, radio and online reporting of the Olympic Games.

When on the 11th of February 2014 Natalie Geisenberger won the gold medal for tobogganing, also Sophora was in best form with 1,6 million page hits per hour.

Summer Olympic Games in London 2012

The 2012 Summer Olympics, formally the Games of the XXX Olympiad and commonly known as London 2012, was a major international multi-sport event celebrated in the tradition of the Olympic Games, as governed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It took place in London. 768 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated.

For the Summer Olympic Games in London ARD provided a wide-ranging online and live streaming offer.

The website sportschau.de/olympia recorded with 144 million page impressions a demand ten times higher than on the Summer Olympic Games 2008 in Peking. Especially live streams, running up to six times parallel, were particularly popular by the online audience. They have been requested over 32,4 million times (Source: daserste.de).

NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk) was in charge of the news coverage about the Olympic Games in London for TV, radio and the internet.

Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver 2010

Around 10 million delivered live streams and over 55 million page impressions within two weeks: The Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver were even online ground-breaking.

For the first time MDR (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk) had the leadership for ARD´s TV, radio and online reporting of the Olympic Games.

Sportschau is a classic German sports magazine on broadcaster ARD, produced by WDR in Cologne. The magazine was started in 1961. In the Saturday edition, the Sportschau shows a summary of the professional German soccer league, whereas the Sunday edition reports on the latest events in various sports.
